Upper Saddle River is located just south of the New York state border in the New Jersey county of Bergen.

It is an affluent and quiet neighborhood which is also a great base for many exciting local attractions and businesses which we shall look at in today’s guide.

Nearby Attractions

Upper Saddle River is ideally located close to many museums and historical sites that are some of the most popular attractions in the area.

The American Labor Museum is located in the nearby borough of Haledon and is an insightful journey through the history of work, workers and the labor movement in the USA. It is open from Wednesday through Saturday from 1-4pm and admission is by a suggested $5 donation.

The Bergen County Zoological Park is one of the most popular attractions in the Upper Saddle River area and is a great place to take the kids, or even just go by yourself! The zoo is open 365 days of the year from 10am until 4:30pm and there are a wide range of animals on show including common North American animals as well as rarer animals from around the world. Kids may also enjoy the pony rides and carousel at the park.

Palisades Interstate Park is a popular attraction not far from Upper Saddle River. There are facilities here to go fishing, boating, camping and other outdoor activities.

If you enjoy sports then the Darlington County Park is just a short drive from Upper Saddle River and has beaches, lakes, volleyball, tennis courts, fishing, picnicking and swimming facilities. It’s a great place for a family getaway.

The Edison National Historic Site is another exciting nearby attraction. What used to be the estate of the world’s most prolific inventor – Thomas Edison – is now open to the public for tours throughout the summer months every Wednesday through Saturday. Tours of the house leave every hour on the hour between 10am and 4pm.

The Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum was established in 1957 in memory of the renowned philanthropist, collector and conservationist of the same name. Blauvelt loved animals and nature and his art collection reflected his passion. At the art museum you can view some of the fantastic works of art he collected over his lifetime. It is one of only five museums in the United States to display only wildlife art.

Bear Mountain State Park is a beautiful way to experience the stunning Hudson Valley just a short drive from Upper Saddle River across the New York State border. During the winter there is an ice rink and skiing facilities and during the summer there is a large public swimming pool as well as a zoo and museum. It is also a great place to go on hikes and trails.

Businesses

Upper Saddle River is largely residential so the majority of businesses are located in the larger, more commercial surrounding areas such as Ramsey and Woodcliff Lake.

However, there are still several businesses that call Upper Saddle River home. Lackland Self-Storage is a large storage company that specializes in the storage of automobiles and boats. Many of the local residents use the business to store their boats during the winter months.

Prentice Hall Business Publishers is the nation’s leading imprint for secondary education and is part of the Pearson Education Group. It is situated on Lake Street in Upper Saddle River.

Compensation Resources Inc. is a business management consultancy based in Upper Saddle River and Sarnafil Inc. is an accountancy firm also in the township. As well as large businesses there are also numerous little stores where residents can purchase their daily necessities in Upper Saddle River itself.

The nearby township of Ramsey is the closest large shopping area to Upper Saddle River and there are a large range of retail and specialty stores most of which are located in the two shopping centers – Interstate Shopping Center and Ramsey Square Shopping Center – both of which are located just off Route 17.

In 2004, luxury car-giant – BMW – opened its North American headquarters in the neighboring township of Woodcliff Lake which has provided lots of jobs for residents as well as put the area on the global car industry map.
